Our Story

1-stop

We do everything in-house. You tell your story once, and we get to work. We don’t hand your case over to someone else. We’re not negotiating something we weren’t involved in.

We’re family-owned and operated. We know insurance recovery. And it means something to us.

We know tragedy doesn’t have normal business hours. We’re there when you need us.

We're proud of our history

Solomon Swerling grew up in Boston’s West End, across from a fire station.  A self-proclaimed “firebug,” Solomon would travel to fires across Boston, seeing first-hand how devastating they were for home and business owners.  A well-educated man, Solomon began to help business owners navigate insurance claims after fires, and in 1898, Swerling Milton Winnick was born.

Solomon’s tradition of compassion and expertise continues to this day, as a fourth generation runs the family business. Principals Diane Swerling and Dayle Swerling Burke proudly carry on the legacy of their father Bruce, grandfather Dan and great-grandfather Solomon: helping families and businesses in a time of great stress and need.

Joined in the 1970s by another family, the Winnicks, Paul Winnick and his son Jeffrey continue with the Swerlings in handing down the family business from one generation to the next, maintaining the same dedication to SMW’s reputation for excellent client service and optimal results.

SMW is proud to be the largest, oldest and best public insurance adjusting firm in New England, boasting a loyal client base that includes some of the largest property management companies on the East Coast.

SMW’s teams have helped families and businesses recover from the most devastating Atlantic and Caribbean hurricanes, setting up camp in Florida or the Virgin Islands to help residents put their companies and lives back together.  Volumes of thank you letters reiterate a similar theme:  “Hiring SMW was the best decision we made…they supported us emotionally and financially – we could not imagine going through this without them.”

“At the end of the day, it’s really about helping people through what can be the worst time in their life – after they may have lost everything they own, their home and all of the memories and keepsakes it contained.  Being here for our clients isn’t just what we do – it’s who we are.” – Diane Swerling
